Cowboys Owner Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal at Fans
The National Football League has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “unintentional” offensive hand signal made toward fans during a Sunday’s contest at MetLife Stadium.
Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team secured a decisive win.
“That was unfortunate. It was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was completely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the wrong finger,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Owner Penalties
This incident isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
- Former Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, who is recognized for his media savvy, reportedly has an approximate net worth of $16 billion, so the penalty easily payable for the wealthy proprietor.

The incident comes after a controversial preseason for Jones, who faced widespread backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt key defensive player Parsons to the Packers.
