A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in national infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
